What is APY?

APY (annual percentage yield) is the yearly return you earn on savings, including the effect of compound interest.

Because interest earns interest, an account with monthly compounding pays slightly more than its stated rate. APY folds that in so accounts can be compared fairly.

Why it matters to you

Savings and CD yields tend to rise when the Fed raises rates and fall when it cuts.
